What Is ISO 9612?

The standard is used by occupational hygienists, EHS managers, safety officers, and acoustic consultants to assess whether workers are exposed to noise levels that could cause hearing damage.
The Three Measurement Strategies
ISO 9612 defines three measurement strategies depending on the work situation:
- Strategy 1 — Task-based measurement: Measure noise during each distinct task a worker performs, then calculate total exposure based on time spent on each task. Best for workers with clearly defined, repetitive tasks.
- Strategy 2 — Job-based measurement: Measure noise exposure for a representative sample of workers doing the same job. Suitable when tasks are varied but the overall job type is consistent.
- Strategy 3 — Full-day measurement: Use a personal dosimeter to measure a worker's noise exposure over the full working day. Best for workers with highly variable or unpredictable noise exposure.

- LEX,8h: Daily noise exposure level, normalized to an 8-hour working day (dB(A))
- Lpeak: Peak sound pressure level — must not exceed 140 dB(C) in most regulations
- LAeq,T: Equivalent continuous A-weighted sound pressure level during measurement period

Step-by-Step Measurement Process
- Define work tasks: Identify and document all tasks performed by the worker or job group
- Calibrate your instrument: Check sound level meter with acoustic calibrator before measurements
- Conduct measurements: Measure LAeq,T for each task (minimum 3 measurements per task recommended)
- Record task durations: Document how long workers spend on each task during a typical working day
- Calculate LEX,8h: Combine task measurements and durations using the ISO 9612 formula
- Assess uncertainty: ISO 9612 requires an uncertainty analysis to be reported alongside results
- Document and report: Prepare a measurement report including all required information per the standard
Action Levels and Limit Values
Most countries set action levels based on ISO 9612 measurements. Common thresholds (check your local regulations):
- Lower action level: LEX,8h = 80 dB(A) — provide hearing protection, inform workers
- Upper action level: LEX,8h = 85 dB(A) — mandatory hearing protection, audiometric testing
- Exposure limit value: LEX,8h = 87 dB(A) — must not be exceeded
